on to the lining

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Have to be honest here. I haven’t actually lined a bag with a circular base before… so I am going to cross my fingers and hope for the best!
I figure I will need a circle shape for the base, and a rectangle to go around the sides… and then somehow join the two together…

So when [...]

the base

Working some more today on the Lisa Gentry Yarn Bag.Firstly… I knew that I wanted to stiffen the base, so the bag would sit nicely and keep its shape. I’ll need something plastic, just in case the bag ever gets wet.

I found this plastic piece which was the base of an old laundry bag. It’s [...]

lisa gentry yarn bag

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I was invited to join a new group at Ravelry the other day… for lovers of Lisa Gentry’s designs. Have to be honest with you – I had NO IDEA who Lisa Gentry was!
Well… it turns out that she is the fastest crocheter in the world. Since 2005 she has been the Guiness Book of [...]

anatomy of a rag bag

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Want to see how the easy peasy crochet bag works up in rags???

I’ve cut my fabric into half inch strips using this method, and used an 8mm crochet hook. Because the fabric does not ‘give’ in the same way which yarns do, there is a tendency to work with too much tension… which results in [...]

winding yarn

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

I’ve always imagined that it would be so much fun to own my own ball winder… to be able to make those adorable little perfect yarn cakes. But I was astounded at the cost. I decided to do a bit of research first to make sure I chose wisely before purchasing.
In the meantime, I learned [...]

a woodland in the springtime…

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

The awful combination of colours from yesterday are actually working up quite nicely together. Surprisingly, they have a really earthy springtime feel to them. The brown and green flecked yarns give the bag a grounded feeling… and then the pinks and yellows dance like flowers amongst them. The green hasn’t quite photographed as nicely as [...]

I have a theory

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

For a while now, I have had a theory…
I believe that when working with a number of strands of yarn held together… you can use ANY combination of colours at all… and still come out with a decent looking bag. I really do.
But I haven’t tested this theory as yet.

Now is my chance!
Little Miss Four [...]

spring cleaning!

Apologies to those of you who are anxiously waiting for me to finish the lining tutorial I started in my last post… I got a little side-tracked.
Admittedly, I get distracted far too easily. Not ideal, but it always makes life interesting!
Want to know what happened?
Well… I brought out my sewing machine to work on the [...]

simple lining tutorial

Friday, August 15th, 2008

You must line your bags…
Seriously.
Even if it is only a very simple lining (like mine) You have put all that wonderful creative energy into crafting the outside of the bag… it really would be a shame not to finish the job. The bag will look better… feel better… and be so much more practical… if [...]
